THEN AND NOW Konkani Original: Sri. P.G. Kamath (1926-2009) Translation: Saratchandra Shenoi
1 Centuries have gone by. Today You know me not And I know you not. Centuries ago, both of us played In the same courtyard. We climbed down the same ditch. We got stuck in the same mud. We bathed side by side at the same river. We dived together at the same place And together did we surface. I dried myself with your towel And you wore that of mine. But Centuries have gone by. Today You know me not And I know you not. 2 Centuries ago We slept in the same cradle. We listened together The sweet stories of our Grandma We laughed together We wept together We slept and dreamt together. We woke up hearing the same song. I would look at you and smile And you would return my smile. But today Centuries have gone by. You know me not And I know you not. 3 Centuries ago You and Me We grew up on the lap of the same Mother. We lived in the trust of the same Father. We both prayed to the one same God. But today We have both forgotten Our Mother and our Father. You pray to your God And I pray to mine. You know not my God And I know not yours. You know me not And I know you not. ****
