‘കൊങ്കണവും കൊങ്കണഭാഷയും’ (Konkan And the Konkani Language’ written by Rao Sahib Dr.V.P.Chavan, published long back in 1924, is still one of the authentic and reliable reference book on Konkani language. The book contains transcript of a series of lectures delivered by Dr.Chavan at the Anthropological Society in Mumbai during Oct, Nov & Dec 1923.
Having got a copy of the book, Sri.S.G.Naik of Vaikom was deeply moved by the contents. He immediately got in touch with the author and offered to prepare a translation of the book into Malayalam for the benefit of Keralites. Dr.Chavan readily agreed and gave the full rights of translation to Sri.Naik. Accordingly the translation (കൊങ്കണവും കൊങ്കണഭാഷയും – Konkanavum Konkana Bhaashayum) was published in 1926. The book was out of print for several decades.
Our Foundation explored the possibilities of bringing out a revised edition. We could collate essays of a few other scholars also, on the same subject, and compile an expanded version of the book. Now ‘കൊങ്കണവും കൊങ്കണഭാഷയും‘ is once again available in Malayalam for the benefit of all those who like to know more of Konkani language. It was released during the 2nd P G Kamath Commemoration Function on 17th June 2012. We feel it is worthwhile for every Konkani lovers to keep a copy in their Home Libraries.
It is in Demy 1/8 size, and has 156 pages, with a price tag of Rs.120/- Credit for the cover picture goes to Sri.N.Balakrishna Mallya, a young artist and writer from Kochi. Copies of the Book are available at PAICO BOOK SHOPS in Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. Copies can be purchased from PRABHUS BOOKS at Thiruvananthapuram also.

This book is a mile stone in the history of konkani. This is a authored one after a deep rooted research. It got a malayalam translation, was also a historical moment. This was then became the basic of konkani language. So this book is considered as a archived one. so i recommend all konkani lovers to procure a copy and use it for konkani activities. and also for handing over to next generation. And used as gift to students on their Upanayana or winning a exam.
Thank you, Sivananda Shenoy, for your valuable comments. Glad to inform that the book has been accepted for free distribution to 100 Degree students from Kerala who have been selected for Vishwa Konkani Students Scholarship, to be distributed in a month’s time.
Pl let me know whether Dr Chavan was an associate of Dr Ambedkar.
Thanks
Surely Dr.Chavan was a contemporary of Dr.B.R.Ambedkar. Both had been mentored by Brahmins. Both were anthropologists and worked for the country’s freedom. In this sense they were associates. However Dr.Chavan was not a member of the Constitution Drafting Committee headed by Dr.Ambedkar. Thanks for your interest on Dr.Chavan.
