Release of ‘CHOOLA’ at Kozhikode

Cover Page of the translated novel 'CHOOLA' Sri.Mahabaleshwar Sail is a renowned Novelist in Konkani. He won the first ‘Vimala Pai Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Puraskar’ of Rupees One Lakh in 2010 for his novel ‘Hawthan’. The book is unique with its theme surrounding the lives of the community of Potters who are facing a threat of a decline.

Hawthan has since been translated into English as ‘The Kiln’ by Smt.Vidya Pai of Kolkata.

A Malayalam translation of ‘Hawthan’ was done by Dr.L.Suneetha Bai, as “CHOOLA” and published by the Konkani Bhas Ani Sanskriti Pratishtan, Mangalore. The book release function was organised at Kozhikode on 25 December 2011 at the Saraswati Kalakunj. During the function Prof.B.Muhammad Ahamed, Chairman of Kerala Folklore Akademi, handed over the first copy of the book to Prof.Pushpa Mallen.  Sri.Balakrishna Marar (Touring Book Stall), Sri.K.Surendra Rao (Editor, Saraswat Vani), Sri.Anand.G.Kamath (P.G.Kamath Foundation) and Sri.Jayaprakash Kulur (Noted Playwright) offered felicitations. Konkani Sardar Sri.Basti Vaman Shenoy presided over the function. Sri.Payyanur Ramesh Pai welcomed the gathering while Sri.K.Santhosh Pai proposed a Vote of Thanks.

We are glad to inform that P.G.Kamath Foundation has partnered with Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Academy in facilitating distribution of the book ‘CHOOLA’. It is the first ever Malayalam translation of a Konkani Novel which is a history by itself. Further, even in Malayalam language, the story of potters has not figured earlier and therefore gets credited with another first.
